As part of the collaboration
with the Main Directorate for the Execution of Criminal Penalties of the Ministry of Justice of the Republic of
Tajikistan, the Civil Society Coalition Against Torture and Impunity in
Tajikistan has commenced independent monitoring of human rights compliance in
correctional facilities across the Republic of Tajikistan.
The primary objective is to
develop and expand forms of public oversight in the application of universally
recognized international standards for human rights compliance in places of
detention. This is achieved through conducting independent public monitoring of
human rights conditions in Tajikistan’s correctional facilities.
In the first three months of
2024, representatives of the Monitoring Group conducted visits to four
correctional institutions. The group plans to continue these visits and intends
to visit an additional four correctional facilities in the near future.
These activities are carried
out within the framework of the adopted Strategy for Reforming the Criminal
Sentencing System of the Republic of Tajikistan until 2030, with financial
support from the Government of Switzerland in Tajikistan (SDC) and the United
Nations Democracy Fund (UNDEF).
