Press release: “Strengthening Civil Society to Advance the Human Rights of Prisoners in Tajikistan”
Starting from February 1, 2024, the NGO “Human
Rights Center” and the Public Foundation “Legal Initiative,” in
collaboration with the Main Directorate for the Execution of Criminal Penalties
of the Ministry of Justice of the Republic of Tajikistan (GUIN MJ RT) and with
the financial support of the UN Democracy Fund, will initiate the
implementation of the project: “
Strengthening Civil Society to Advance the Human Rights of Prisoners in
Tajikistan“.
The project aims to support the Republic of Tajikistan
in promoting the rights of prisoners within the framework of the ongoing
reform, aligned with the adopted Strategy for Reforming the System of Execution
of Criminal Penalties of the Republic of Tajikistan in accordance with
international human rights standards.
The project encompasses the following objectives:

Strengthening national legislation pertaining to
the rights of individuals deprived of liberty and promoting their rights at
both national and international levels. This activity will be based on
comprehensive analysis and monitoring of detention facilities, with a
particular emphasis on the rights of women, children, and persons living with
HIV.

Raising awareness among prisoners and
governmental bodies regarding non-discrimination and the adherence to human
rights standards within detention facilities.

Implementing rehabilitation programs within
correctional institutions, which will include psychosocial and psychological
support services.
The project
objectives signify a significant stride towards advancing the reform of the
penitentiary system and designed to foster greater collaboration between
Tajikistan’s governmental bodies and civil society, ultimately enhancing the
protection of the rights of individuals deprived of liberty.
